ABOUT US

Applied Biodesign is the private bioengineering practice of physician-engineer Dr. Miguel Aljibe.

Dr. Aljibe is both a licensed physician and a board-certified mechanical engineer. He specializes in surgical device innovation, research and development particularly in virtual surgical planning and patient-specific devices. He holds a BS Mechanical Engineering degree and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of the Philippines Diliman and Manila, respectively. He served as Program Manager of UP Surgical Innovation and Biotechnology Lab (UP SIBOL) from 2021 to 2024.

He is also an adjunct clinical faculty at the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery of Philippine General Hospital (PGH) and a biomedical engineering lecturer at the College of Medicine, Batangas State University.

At present, he is pursuing graduate studies in Bioengineering at the Institute of Science Tokyo.

CASES

These are just some highlighted cases where we worked with surgeons to design custom engineering solutions for patients in the Philippines.

Zygomatic arch implant design

We designed a a two-part custom implant to help surgeons reconstruct a patient’s midface defect.
The physical implant was fabricated in Polyether ether ketone (PEEK), a biocompatible polymer.

Thoracic cage reconstruction mold and guide

A novel reconstruction method for patients with chest wall tumors was developed by the Philippine General Hospital and UP SIBOL. We designed patient-specific molds for the intraoperative fabrication of Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) sternocostal implants. The flexible molds were fabricated by UP SIBOL.

Double jaw surgery virtual planning

We simulated a maxillary and mandibular osteotomy based on the instructions of the client surgeon.

The resulting digital plan was then 3D printed to be used as an intraoperative guide for plate bending.

In this particular case, VSP was able to contribute in shortening OR duration.
